Tournament Information

Dear sir/madam,

I am writing to introduce to you and the students at your university my
plans of staging the First Annual Ontario Intercollegiate Inline Hockey
Challenge. For this challenging initiative to be a success, I will need
the support of the athletic leadership at your institution. (Please
forward this message to the appropriate administrator at your
university. N.B. A letter similar to this was sent to all O.U.A. and
O.C.A.A. members on June 1, 1998 from Calgary on Canadian Hockey
letterhead; a fax transmission was sent on June 17-19, 1998.)

Most of the principles of the tournament have been established. Games
will begin on xxxxx and proceed through to xxxxx, 1998. In the event
that more than 15 teams register, the tournament will be expanded
accordingly. The schedule will be devised such that no university team
will need to commute more than once. Indeed, lest concerns arise about
travel and/or accommodations, be assured that both will be provided.

The tournament will take place at the Rinx, a multi-functional
entertainment complex located in Toronto -- it includes, arguably, the best
inline skating surface in Ontario. In accordance with the official rules
of Canadian Hockey Inline, each team will be entitled to a maximum of 14
players in uniform (including 2 goaltenders) and a minimum of 6 eligible
players. Multiple teams from your institution are welcome. Be mindful
that whatever the number of teams, each and every one should have a Team
Captain. Needless to say, as this is an intercollegiate event all
participants must be registered as students at the university they
represent. There will be men's, women's, and multiple skill-level
divisions. Costs incurred through the purchase of insurance and awards,
the use of referees and facilities, and registration with Canadian Hockey
Inline will entail a registration fee, which is, as yet, undetermined.
Payment of the registration fee may also entitle the participant to a
coupon package featuring savings on products and services from the likes
of Nike, Bauer, and Easton. Arrangements have been made for Rogers Cable
Community TV to broadcast most, if not all of the games; highlights,
feature stories, and "Live Eye" coverage should also air on local area
television stations such as City TV, CKVR Barrie ("The new VR"), and City
Pulse 24.

Support from your university for this initiative, if forthcoming, should
come in the form of a designated University Representative, whose duties
will include: liaising with myself and Corey McNabb (Membership
Coordinator, Canadian Hockey Inline) and handling any and all
administrative issues arising during the course of the tournament's
preparation. Naturally, this University Rep should be an individual who
has demonstrated a high degree of motivation, responsibility, and
dedication to school athletics -- he or she should also preferably have
some prior experience in playing inline hockey. Please make this
appointment carefully. (Possible candidates include coaches or convenors
involved with floor, ball, or ice hockey at the varsity, intramural, or
club level.) To expedite the tournament's logistical preparation and
coordination, please reply as soon as possible with contact information
for the designated University Representative.

message.

initiative through. Thank you for your time and attention.

Dear sir/madam, This is a notice to all O.U.A./O.C.A.A. institutions to which the letter announcing the First Annual Ontario Intercollegiate Inline Hockey Challenge was delivered. Please note that the date of this inaugural event has been changed to October 2 to October 4. Unless confronted with an exceptional circumstance, this will remain the date for the O.I.I.H.C. As stated before, in the event that more than 15 teams register, the tournament will be expanded accordingly. Please also note that, as inline hockey is decidedly not an official O.U.A./O.C.A.A. sport, there is, strictly speaking, no need for university/college administrators to become involved in the tournament's logistics. Rather, the intended audience is the group of Ontario university/college student convenors who have demonstrated interest and leadership in the sports of ball, floor, ice, and/or inline hockey programmes at the club, intramural, or varsity levels at your respective institutions. There is likely a faction of students, whether small or large, which would be keen on participating. This is why, in sum, I believe that the student convenors would be the most appropriate party through whom the notice of a provincial tournament should be conveyed. (Gossip among like-minded students is a much more effective vehicle for promotion than mundane flyers on athletics' bulletin boards.) Indeed, one particular university in Ontario has already agreed to leave the decision of whether to participate up to the collective discretion of the students involved in its intramural hockey programmes. And lastly, this is a reminder to those who have yet to respond to do so as soon as possible. (Replies should include contact information for a University/College Rep.) It is understood that the summer break is a difficult time for schools to make decisions and to correspond; please be mindful, however, that many tournament particulars are contingent on your replies. Thank you for your time. Hope to hear from you soon! Sincerely, Alan Han Website: http://www.sportslink-hitit.com/oiihc (under construction; see http://www.sportslink-hitit.com/)
