TORONTO-The Alberta Pandas will be playing for gold at the 1999 CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship.
The Pandas defeated the OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 at Varsity Arena on Saturday afternoon. The victory, combined with Friday's win over McGill, allowed Alberta to advance to the championship game, which will be played Sunday at 8 p.m.
Alberta opened the scoring at 4:34 of the first period when Krysty Lorenz scored on the power play. Lorenz added another marker at 6:44 to give the Pandas a 2-0 lead, but with 36 seconds left in the period, Laurier's Caroline Hall scored to bring her team within a goal.
At 7:21 of the second, Alberta's Lori Shupak scored and her goal ended up being the winner. Caroline Hall scored on the power play 5:16 into the third period to reduce Alberta's lead to 3-2, and that was as close as Laurier would get.
Tonight at 7, the St. Francis Xavier X-Women square off against the Concordia Stingers, champions of last year's tournament. If Concordia wins, it will face Alberta in the gold medal final.
