TORONTO-For the second straight day at the 1999 CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship, a playoff contest was decided by an exciting shootout.
Friday afternoon, the Alberta Pandas and the McGill Martlets were tied 2-2 after 50 minutes of regulation time and 10 minutes of overtime. In the ensuing shootout, Alberta outscored McGill one goal to none to win the game 3-2.
Alberta went up 2-0 on goals by Maria Mackenzie and Sue Huculak and appeared to have the game well in hand. At 14:54 of the third period, however, an Alberta defender grabbed the puck and McGill was awarded a penalty shot. Julie Hornsby made good on the opportunity, bringing the Martlets within a goal.
With 1:58 left in the frame, Hornsby intercepted an errant clearing attempt in the Pandas zone and passed to Dana Rittmaster, who one-timed the puck for the tying goal.
Ten minutes of sudden-death overtime solved nothing, so the two teams went to a shootout. Alberta's fourth shooter, Trish Semeniuk, beat McGill goaltender Kim St. Pierre stick-side for the only score.
With the victory, the Alberta Pandas have a 1-0 record and are tied for first place in Pool A with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Alberta and Laurier face off Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to the gold medal game Sunday at 8 p.m. McGill, at 0-2, is relegated to the fifth place game Sunday at noon.
Players of the game were Alberta's Lori Shupak (one assist) and McGill's St. Pierre.
Tonight at 7, the host Toronto Varsity Blues will play the St. Francis Xavier X-Women in the fourth game of the preliminary round. Yesterday, Toronto lost 3-2 against the Concordia Stingers, in a match that was also decided by shootout. For the X-Women, this will be their first match of the tournament.
