DAY 3
|
TORONTO- The Alberta Pandas and the Concordia Stingers will play for gold at the 1999 CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship.
The Pandas, who finished fifth at last year's national tournament, defeated the OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The victory, combined with their 3-2 win against the McGill Martlets on Friday, placed the Pandas first in Pool A.
The Stingers, who defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 on Thursday, shut out the AUAA champion St. Francis Xavier X-Women 10-0 on Saturday night to come out on top in Pool B.
By winning their respective pools Alberta and Concordia advanced to the championship game, which will be televised nationally on TSN, Sunday at 8 p.m.
In the Laurier-Alberta match, the Pandas were aggressive from the start, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes. Krysty Lorenz scored on the power play at 4:34 and she added another marker at 6:44 to put Alberta up 2-0. The Hawks regained some momentum when Caroline Hall scored with 36 seconds left in the first period to cut Alberta's lead in half.
Lori Shupak scored at 7:21 of the second period to restore the Pandas' two-goal lead, but that margin was again reduced when Hall scored on a 5-on-3 advantage 5:16 into the third.
Alberta, which blew a two-goal, third-period lead before defeating McGill, was in danger of having another late collapse when defender Marlow Kulak was penalized with 46 seconds left in regulation time for using an illegal stick. However, the Hawks were unable to score on the subsequent power play, despite pulling their goalie for a two-skater advantage.
In contrast with the Alberta-Laurier match, the contest between Concordia and St. F.X. was not at all close. The Stingers scored three goals in the first 1:45, chasing St. F.X. goalie Winnell Jackson out of the game, and they finished with six markers in the opening period.
In total, the Stingers outshot the X-Women 48-10, and nine different players scored. Anne Rodrigue had a pair of markers, while Annie Boucher, Karen Kendall, Laura MacKenzie, Corinne Swirsky, Deana Huyghebaert, Leanne Martell, Kari Colpitts and Marie-Claude Allard had one goal each.
Concordia netminder Lisa Herritt stopped only 10 shots to record the shutout.
With the defeat, the X-Women finish the preliminary round with a 0-2 record to place last in Pool B. They will play McGill in the fifth-place match Sunday at noon.
Following that contest, Laurier will play OUA rival Toronto in the bronze medal match.
