DAY 2
|
TORONTO-For the second straight day at the 1999 CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship, a playoff contest was decided by an exciting shootout.
Friday afternoon, the Alberta Pandas and the McGill Martlets were tied 2-2 after 50 minutes of regulation time and 10 minutes of overtime. In the ensuing shootout, Alberta outscored McGill one goal to none to win the game 3-2.
Alberta went up 2-0 on third-period power-play goals by Maria Mackenzie and Sue Huculak and appeared to have the game well in hand. At 14:54 of the third period, however, an Alberta defender grabbed the puck and McGill was awarded a penalty shot. Julie Hornsby made good on the opportunity, bringing the Martlets to within a goal.
Then, with 1:58 left in the frame, Hornsby intercepted an errant clearing attempt in the Pandas zone and passed to Dana Rittmaster, who one-timed the puck past Stacey McCullough for the tying goal.
Ten minutes of sudden-death overtime solved nothing, so the two teams went to a shootout. Alberta's fourth shooter, Trish Semeniuk, beat McGill goaltender Kim St. Pierre on the stick side for the only score.
The Pandas now have a record of 1-0, which ties them for first place in Pool A with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Those two teams will face off on Saturday at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to the gold medal game on Sunday at 8 p.m.
McGill, which finishes the preliminary round with a 0-2 mark, will play in the fifth-place game Sunday at noon.
In the second game of the day at the 1999 CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship, the host Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the St. Francis Xavier X-Women, 3-1.
In a tournament where the goalies have been superb, St. F.X. netminder Winnell Jackson was no different. She stopped 29 shots, many from in close, to keep her team in the game.
The Blues took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Jackie Cherevaty and Rhonda Mitchell. St. Francis Xavier's Jennifer Beaton made things interesting with a power-play marker to close the gap to 2-1, but at 8:12 of the second, Toronto added an insurance marker when Barb Tyers tipped in a Mitchell shot from the blueline.
With the victory, Toronto, which lost to the Concordia Stingers 3-2 by shootout on Thursday, finishes the preliminary round with a record of 1-1. For the Blues to return to the gold medal final, St. F.X. must beat Concordia tomorrow at 7 p.m. This will be a tall task for the X-Women, who will take on the champions of last year's tournament.
