CIAU WOMEN'S

Kim is a 5'8" Physical Education freshman from Chateauguay, Quebec. Her accomplishments this year included being named QSSF Rookie of the Year and being named to the Canadian National Team January 28", 1999. For the Martlets she had a stellar 2.35 goals against average with three shutouts in 22 games. She also set a McGill record with 51 saves in her CIAU regular season debut against Concordia.
Robyn is a second year General Studies student from Stillwater, Nova Scotia. She is an exceptional multi-sport athlete. This past year she played for the CIAU National Champion Calgary Dinosaurs women's soccer team seeing considerable action as a reserve midfielder. Once soccer was over she turned her talents to the ice hockey rink and was the goaltender for the Dines team that advanced to the conference final. She recorded three shutouts in conference action this year and was rewarded for her efforts by being named to the Canada West conference all-star team.
Leanne is a first year Bachelor of Science student from Mabou, Nova Scotia. The 21 year old had an impressive rookie season combining for 11 points in 13 games for the X-Women. She then lead St-FX to the AUAA title scoring over a point a game in the AUAA playoffs with two goals and two assists in three games. For her efforts, she was named to the AUAA All-Star team, AUAA tournament MVP, and player of the game in the semi-final and final.
Geneviéve is a 5'5" third year exercise science student from Montreal, Quebec. She was "by far the most consistent defencemen" for the Stingers this season according to her coach Les Lauton.
As Concordia's assistant captain, she managed 10 points in league play this season and was a unanimous selection to the QSSF All-Star team.
A second-year player and Nursing student from Cobourg, Ontario, the 5'6" athlete who was named Female Athlete of the Year five times during her high school career. An offensive force on the blue-line, she led the Lancers this season in points with nine and goals with three. Her accomplishments landed her on the OUA Conference All-Star team and her first All-Canadian selection.
Colleen is a second year General Studies student from Kennedy, Saskatchewan. This season she was a mainstay on the Dinosaurs defense and is regarded as one of the top players in the Canada West conference. She has been a first team conference all-star two years running and this marks the second time that she has been a CIAU All-Canadian.
"CIAU 1999 Player of the Year Corinne is a 5'5", 4" year Exercise Science student from Thompson, Manitoba. She had another tremendous season this year with the Stingers. As the leading scorer in the OSSE, Corinne is one of the biggest threats in women's hockey. Proof of this were her four goals & two assists in a 6-1 win over the Beatrice Aeros on Jan. 30, 1999. The 1999 CIAU Player of the Year, she was also a 1999 QSSF MVP and 1999 QSSF All-Star. She scored 39 goals and 27 assists in 31 games overall for the 1998-99 season.
Urszula is from Toronto, Ontario and is currently in her 2nd year of university studying Symbiotics. She is one of the quickest players in the OUA, finishing third in this year's scoring race with 32 points in 20 regular season games. Her hard work and determination has been shown in her superior performance which has been acknowledged by being named the OUA Player of the Year. For three consecutive years she has been captain of the Jr. Aeros, leading them to three Provincial AA Championships.
Brandy is a second year education student in a four-year program at the University of Regina. Brandy's hometown is Langbank, Saskatchewan, where she played hockey with the Saltcoat midget girls team before joining the Cougars in 1997-98. She is the team's leading scorer, with 19 goals and 17 assists for a total of 36 points. Brandy brings the varsity hockey team skill, leadership and drive and handles all challenges like a true champion. Resultant of all this, Brandy is the 1998-99 recipient of the Bill Clarke Scholarship at the University of Regina.
Caroline is a 5'4" third year bachelor of science student from Montreal, Quebec. She is the uncontested offensive leader on her team scoring four points in eight league games for the Patriotes this season. She was nominated to the QSSF All-Star team for the second consecutive year and possesses a very respectable 3.48 grade point average.
Lori is a 5'7" center that hails from Sherwood Park, Alberta and is in her freshman year of a science degree. She played in all 20 of the Pandas games in '99 and tied for the team lead in goals with 19 and was second in points with 37. Shupak had one hat trick and three 2-goal games this season.
Lisa is from Thunder Bay, Ontario and stands at 5'5". She is in her 2nd year studying Geography. This year, in regular season play she was second in the OUA in scoring with 19 goals, and 14 assists for a total of 33 points, a single season record for Laurier. She averaged a goal per game and her solid two-way play earned first team OUA All-Star recognition.
TORONTO - Thursday evening at the University of Toronto Great Hall, the 1999 CIAU Women's Ice Hockey All-Canadian Team and the recipients of the CIAU major awards were announced.
For the second year in a row, the Concordia Stingers Corinne Swirsky was named the top female hockey player in Canadian University sport.
Member of the 1998 CIAU Champions Stingers, Swirsky is considered to be "one of the best offensive players" to wear the Stinger maroon black and gold by her coach II Les Lawton. High praise considering the many players with national team experience that have played for Concordia over the years.
The Thompson, Manitoba native was also named QSSF MVP (second year in a row), QSSF All-Star (third year in a row), Tournament MVP twice this year, and was a finalist for the Howard, Mackle Award in 1998.
The second major award recipient of the evening was Bridget Bates of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues who picked up the TSN Award as the athlete who best exemplified outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement.
Bates, who hails from Brampton, Ontario, is currently enrolled in a Masters of Divinity and has maintained a "B" average throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies.
On the ice, Bates was awarded the most improved player trophy in her rookie campaign and has been among the OUA's leading scorers regularly throughout her university career. This season she tallied back to back hat-tricks and totalled 12 goals in 19 games.
In the community Bates dedicates her spare time to teaching of young children and caring for the sick and elderly. This past year she was a Student Chaplain and a Lay Pastoral Visitor for the sick and the dying at the Toronto Mount Sinai Hospital.
Also awarded on this evening were the Women's Ice Hockey All-Canadians.
In all, twelve women were named to the elite squad which consisted of representatives from Toronto,.Windsor, University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres, In all, twelve women were named to the elite squad which consisted of Alberta, Regina, McGill, St. Francis Xavier, Wilfrid Laurier and two reps from each of Concordia and Calgary.
