Tournament MVP: Stacy McCullough (G, Alberta) Comments: This tournament was marked by how close the top 5 teams were. It was so close, that Pool II's standings were just about decided by a nightmare tie-breaking scenario (had Manitoba and UBC tied their game, Alberta would likely have been eliminated on the basis of penalty minutes!). A testament to Alberta's defence was the fact that they were able to make the final by scoring (and allowing) only one goal. See you later, John -- John Edwards - umedwar6@cc.umanitoba.ca http://www.islandnet.com/~jedward Newspaper article from the Edmonton Journal February 17, 1998 Early-bird Pandas head to nationals Scott Cruickshank Special To The Journal Edmonton - You've got to get up pretty early in the morning to beat the Alberta Pandas. In fact, you've got to get up pretty early just to see the women's hockey team. In their first season of operation, the Pandas have endured a winter of non-prime-time practices, including two a week scheduled for 6:30 a.m. All that, just to get ready for the Canada West showcase this past weekend at the University of Calgary. "That's a pretty devoted bunch of girls," said Alberta coach Howie Draper. "Next year, we'll be pushing pretty hard to get more of a regular ice slot. They certainly showed that they deserve it." The Pandas went undefeated in four games en route to winning the conference's inaugural women's hockey crown. That earned Alberta a trip to the CIAU tournament in Montreal Feb. 26 to March 1. "Maybe now they'll say, 'Hey, these guys won a championship. Let's give them some good ice time,' " chuckled team captain Trish Semeniuk, adding that the bleary-eyed workouts actually pulled the players together. "Everyone on the team was willing to make that sacrifice. That willingness paid off in the end because we were ready, we were prepared. "It was a little hard at the beginning but once you get used to it, it was all right." In addition to practising, the Pandas have been busy compiling a 19-7-4 record in the Northern Alberta Women's Hockey League. Overall, Draper's squad owns an impressive 31-12-8 log. "We've made our place in Edmonton now," said Semeniuk, a second-year chemical engineering student. "It helps out our program a heck of a lot to start out with that kind of victory. "It's just a big boost for the whole program here at the U of A." However, the six-team conference tournament was hardly a cakewalk for the Pandas. All four of their games were deadlocked after regulation time. "That's got to be a record somewhere," said Draper. "It was really stressful. It just seemed we couldn't finish a game with a win. But everything worked out in the end." [Edmonton Journal article continued...] Round-robin ties against UBC and Manitoba remained unbroken, but the playoff games were a different story. The Pandas and host Dinosaurs were scoreless after 60 minutes and a 10-minute overtime period in the semifinal. Stacey McCullough's goalkeeping and Krysty Lorenz's goal gave Alberta 1-0 shootout victory. The drama continued in Sunday's final against Manitoba as Lorenz netted her third goal of the game seven minutes into overtime. The 4-3 win made the Pandas the conference champs, something no other women's hockey team can boast. "It's great to be on the first page, on the first line of the history books," said Draper. "The girls were ecstatic. They have a sense of what they've achieved, this being the inaugural year. They're very pleased with themselves." With the Pandas capturing the conference title only days before Canada plays for Olympic gold, women's hockey is quickly losing its tag as a novelty. It's arrived. "This whole year has been perfect timing," said Draper. "We got a lot of attention early on. That was great for us; I don't know that we would've got that same kind of attention had we not been in an Olympic year. So it's been very timely." - Edmonton Journal
