TOURNAMENT INFORMATION A message from Jack Holmes It is with great pleasure that we present our 1st Swiss Alps annual European Hockey Tournament in Switzerland. After many years of bringing players from Europe to Canada, giving them the opportunity to see another country and meeting players from all over the world. Now we would like to give the same opportunity to players from Canada. U.S.A. and other Countries by coming to Switzerland. In the past 6 years, I have been bringing youth teams both boys and girls, to Canada in the summer to play in the Okanagan Tournament and also in the N.A.S.H. Tournament in British Columbia, Canada. By the interest of team managers, clubs, individual players and requests, we have decided after years of planning to start our own Tournament here in Switzerland and to continue it every year. We would like to have a high level Tournament, that also offers Tours, Ice Practice and extra games. So you see, this would be a Tournament and at the same time a Culture Tour. If a Team wanted to have a longer stay in Europe, then this can be arranged along with transport, accommodations and extra games or tours. The Teams would come from Canada, US.A., Europe and the hosting Country Switzerland. Our interest is for hockey players to profit from playing in a good level Tournament, at the same time see and meet other people in this World and make “friends for a life time”. We welcome you as a TEAM or INDIVIDUAL player to our First Swiss Alps Tournament 2004 .................Jack Holmes Location....... KANDERSTEG, Berner Oberland, Switzerland 2004 Kandersteg is in the Berner Oberland Alps in the Central part of Switzerland. reachable via train and bus. The village..... Which is more attractive? The gem of an alpine village with all the traditional wooden chalets and a culture which is practised daily or the breathtaking, unspoiled scenery which surrounds the village? One thing is sure, Kandersteg is the ideal place to switch off from your daily stress, recuperate and tank up with new energy. The village presents a complete village life to our guests. The historical backgound to our village can be found in a small exhibition located in the lower floor of the Church Parish House and, during the season, Dia-shows and guided tours of the village. Welcome to Kandersteg Culture + Traditions...... When the members of the Yodelling club meet they are continuing a traditional form of singing which is rooted in the population. The same is true for the traditional costume dancers who are extremely proud of their ornate "Sunday-best" costumes and the intricate dance steps which have been passed down from previous generations. They all want to show off their prowess at guest evenings and to involve the public in their efforts. The brass bands, which play in the open air, add to the friendly atmosphere as does the church choir. The Sport Club offers a variety of sports to toughen the body. Flower hikes are very popular. They lead over mountain hiking paths and mountain trails, to the seven alpine huts provided by the Swiss Alpine Club. Culture includes Nature and all that grows and lives here as well as the air we breathe and the water we drink and the necessary respect for all of these. People are the centre of a community which seeks to provide an environment in which all can feel comfortable and safe. The best a tourist village can offer its guests is a feeling for the values which are held by the inhabitants in the hope that these will add to his life at home. The nature......We do not just pay lip service to these sentiments but we live them in our daily lives. The fascinating mountain landscape has influenced the lives of the villagers for centuries. Over the years we have learned to treat each other with respect. Dive into the unique natural beauty around Kandersteg. Discover fascinating plants from the magnificent mountain pines to the alpine roses and edelweiss. Observe ibex, eagles, chamois and marmots as they live their lives in their natural habitats. Mountain peaks attract new guests (1860)........In the summer of 1860, two Englishmen, a vicar and a doctor and an American arrived in Kandersteg and asked for a guide to take them to the top of the Blümlisalp (3663 m above sea level). The young Fritz Ogi was the only person with enough courage to take the job. He became the founder of a mountain guide dynasty and his gravestone, next to the church, bears a dedication to this pioneer who conquered our mountains. One mountain peak after the other was conquered and the mountaineers stayed longer and longer in the village. The profession of mountain guide was born. In 1853, Rudolf Egger from Frutigen became the host of the "Gasthof zum Ritter". He had worked in the hotel trade in England and wanted to draw the attention of the English to Kandersteg. He renamed his guest house "Hotel Victoria". This name was later given to the extension which was built in 1875 and the original building retained its name "Gasthof zum Ritter". Five new hotels were built in the 19th. century and these, together with the 25 hotels which were erected in the 20th. century changed the village forever. New professions - mountain guide, ski teacher – sprang up and there were many positions created in the hotel trade. The inhabitants of Kandersteg who had previously enjoyed a simple, hard, mountain farming life began to enjoy the fruits of prosperity and could build a solid, stable financial basis for their families. This period is mentioned in many travel reports. Mark Twain stayed in Kandersteg for the night of August 23rd. 1878 and then hiked over the Gemmi Pass. His humorous but accurate account of his journey can be found in his book "A Tramp Abroad". The guest book at mountain guest house and restaurant Schwarenbach half-way across the Gemmi Pass has inscriptions from many famous personalities such as Alexander Dumas, Guy de Maupassant, Picasso and Lenin. Zacharias Werner wrote a play entitled "The 24th. February" which gave the location the reputation of a murderers cavern and this made it even more attractive to tourists.
