Women's hockey is really just starting to become organised in the Tampa/St Pete Florida area. Currently, there are no established women's leagues (to my knowledge), but we are putting one together for the fall. One of the (two) local rinks put together a 10 week beginners womens hockey session, and we have had about 20-25 women each week of varying skill levels. Since many of us FL residents have moved down from colder climates, several of the women have played at the college or high school level. Others had never laced up a pair of hockey skates.
I'm not sure how the costs compare to men's hockey, but the problem in FL is a growing interest in hockey, which leads to high demand for ice time. We should have two more rinks opening in the next 18 months, which should help the situation. The men's teams seem pretty open to letting women play, there just aren't two many women who feel comfortable playing in the mens leagues.
If anyone in the Tampa/St Pete FL area is interested in joining us, please email me to get in touch!
