The first organized women's world hockey tournament was held at the North York Centennial Arena in North York, Ontario from April 21-26, 1987. Although this tournament was not an official world championship that was sanctioned by the IIHF, it showcased elite women's hockey and opened the doors for international women's hockey competion! It was a stepping stone to the official IIHF sanctioned Women's World Hockey Championships which started in 1990. The 1987 World Tournament gave the world its first look at female hockey players. Who would have predicted that just over 10 years later women's hockey would be an Olympic sport?!
