The bottom two teams from the 2000 Women's World Championship (Germany and Kazakstan), and the top two teams from the Division I 2000 Women's World Championship (Japan and Switzerland) took part in this qualification tournament.
The qualification tournament took place in Engelberg, Switzerland from Feb 8-11, 2001. The tournament had a single round robin format, where each team played each of the other teams once, and the total points were used to determine the final rankings of the teams. The first tie-breaker is the head to head result between the two teams.
The highest ranked team in this qualification tournament was Kazakstan, so they will join the USA, Finland, and China in Pool B at the 2002 Olympic Games. Germany, who ranked second in this qualification tournament, will join Canada, Sweden, and Russa in Pool A at the 2002 Olympic Games.
