Women's Hockey
Congratulations to Team Canada who defeated the USA by a score of 3-2
in the final game, to claim the Olympic gold medal. In the bronze
medal game, Sweden upset Finland by a score of 2-1 to claim the
bronze medal.
Eight countries competed in women's ice hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, USA. This is two more teams than the number that competed at the inaugural 1998 Winter Olympics.
The top six countries from the 2000 Women's World Hockey Championship qualified automatically for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
To determine the final two teams to compete, there was a qualification tournament in February 2001 between the bottom two teams at the A Pool 2000 Women's World Hockey Championship (Germany and Japan) and the top two teams at the B Pool 2000 Women's World Hockey Championship (Kazachstan and Switzerland). Based on this qualification tournament, Kazachstan and Germany were given the final two places in the 2002 Olympic Games.
