The inaugural IIHF European Women's Champions Cup started on October 14, 2004 as the first two rounds were completed in Latvia and Italy. The winners of each group, Moscow (RUS) and EV Zug (SUI), along with the top two teams from Sweden and Finland, Blues Espoo (FIN) and AIK Solna (SWE)Blues Espoo (FIN) and AIK Solna (SWE)Blues Espoo (FIN) and AIK Solna (SWE), earned the right to move onto the final round, which was played December 16-19, 2004 in Stockholm, Sweden.
The teams were seeded in the respective rounds and groups following the IIHF World Ranking for Women of the European countries and the geographic location of the respective clubs.
