My favourite team is the Pittsburgh Penguins -- No one actually
thinks they were playing bad at the start without a reason do you?
They just wanted everyone else to get a big head start on them so
they could roar back, with a rookie goalie, and win it all!! We

My daughter Louise - age 14 - is now in her 5th season playing
hockey in UK. She really enjoys it despite encountering initial
hostility from boys' parents.
She is currently in the England Women's Under-19 squad. She
currently plays Pee-Wee (under 14) and Women's Premier Divison
hockey at Slough. We moved to Slough due to a sexist junior coach at
Swindon (you're a girl - sit on the bench!)
Girls in the UK are allowed to play up-to 2years above age limit for
junior (boys') teams. Happy Hockey!

I want my daughters to play hockey like I did. My oldest just, she
is 3, just got her first hockey stick and we play everynight before
she goes to bed. She loves the game! My youngest is going to be a
goalie like me. She is 18 months old and is almost as big as her

I am a female hockey player who currently plays in a Men's league in
Cincinnati, Ohio. My team is the "Roadmen" and we are currently the
league champions here. I have also recently begun to play for a
women's team (we finally got enough women here to have a line!) We
have only practiced togethor for a month and have not selected a
name yet, but will be doing so shortly. We have about 12 gals
involved plus Goalie so far, our core players (including) me are
experienced, intermediate to advanced level players, but we are
inviting all women, including beginners to come out and join us!
This is my first experience playing with and against women and so
far I've really enjoyed it and found the competition level to be
quite satisfying. I also have a daugher, Bianca , who is 7 years
old and I've had her playing since she was 5. I coached her mite
team this season and I took the only other 2 girls who wanted to
play and put them togethor for my team. I am really hoping to
become alot more involved in developing Girls Hockey here in
Cincinnati, as it is badly needed. I found coaching Mites to be a
tremendously rewarding experience and I'm happy to know that once my
own playing days are over that I'll derive alot of satisfaction out
of coaching.

Hilary is just 3 years old, (this is written by her dad, Robert) But
literally her second word was "hockey" (right after "mama") Brother
Jeff plays awesome in-line hockey and ice hockey (Bantam), and
Hilary is looking to the day soon when she starts on skates, with a
big brother role model. (Can't keep her from running onto the rink
evey time she gets in the building, already has her own stick, etc.)
She saw the photo of Tara Mounsey in the recent Newsweek, and said
"That girl plays hockey!! Hilary wants to play hockey!!"
So--- from a dad, who's also a coach and certified referee, THANK
YOU to all of you who have paved the way for my youngest daughter to
pursue what, at this point, is her love of sport, in a wonderful and
exciting game that should, and does, transcend gender and age (I'm
still playing at 47 years of age).
If Hilary wants it, I too hope that some day the ranks of Tara
Mounsey, Cami Granato, Stephanie O'Sullivan, and all the rest of
you, will include the name of Hilary Sherlock in the Team USA Colors
for the Olympics in 2018.
Next stop: A women's professional NHL, to restore the beauty, grace,
and skill to the goon-and-violence infested NHL. I think fans
(particularly us boomers who are aging a bit and are tired of hockey
games that resemble WWF Wrestling matches)would gladly FLOCK to such
an endeavor!!

I'm playing for the Norwegian national team who will try to qualify

qualification will be the 1997 world champiomship which will be held

I am coaching the womens team in Aalborg for the third season, and I
really enjoy coching the womenss team.
However, my wife is not so pleased with! I hope we qualify for the
play-offs this year. We also have a former figure skater Charleene

Hi!My name is Meredith. The real reason that I am writing to you is
because I love inline dance skating and have just gone into a
patnership with a man named Zee "BLADERUNNER"Brown. He has been
working for the past two years in developing a training program for
inline skating to be taught indoors to improve balance,control and
technique! I am wondering if women on Hockey leagues would be at all
interested in hearing about our program. I do not want to get any of

Plus I am deaf woman and I played women's ice hockey for hearing
hockey leagues from 1980 to 1989 with Hillcrest House Leagues
teams, and few year later in 1992 to 1993 I played with Rochester
Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) but I were National Technical

My wife is the goalie for the Vail Colorado Women's Hockey Team.
The have been the state champions 7 times in the last 10 years.
We recently went to China and played the Sports College, Technical
College and the Chinese womans national team.
We also played a game aginst a women's team in Hong Kong.

assistant captian of the 1997 Canadian team compeating in the world
championship in Kitchener, was handing out Gold medals. She also
signed autographs, and answered any questions that we wanted

I am researching women in sports, hoping to add female players to
sports video games, if there is sufficient interest. I don't
actually play hockey, but I do play soccer, softball, and tennis, as
well as ski, and snowboard. I rollerblade tolerably, but don't
iceskate very well, so playing hockey probably isn't a good match
for me. :)
If you have comments about the presence or lack of presence of women

We won the Peterborough tournament for our division and we

I am currently enrolled at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova

I always wanted to play but wasn't allowed to as a child. Last year,
I signed up for a powerskating course, learned quickly and started
my own team, Falmouth Hat Tricks. We are now going to start our own
league instead of joining one because we would have to drive too
far. I have the only adult women's team on Cape Cod. Soon, you'll

hope that one day womens hockey will be Pro some day. From
the looks of it, you could fit right in. It is very
impresive that you are able to do so much with school and
hockey. I am 20 and go to college, but i am not able to do

your web site is incredible! I know I'll spend many hours to come
checking this all out! I'm in my 3rd season, playing for the Lady
Blues in Howell, Michigan. We are a Sr. Rec team.
How I became interested in hockey? Well, I've skated since I was 2
and skating is the greatest sport! I use to figure skate, but have
since been inspired to play by the likes of Dino Ciccarelli (who
isn't as big as the people he plays with) and Steve Yzerman. Yes,
I'm a Red Wings fan.
Keep up the good work and who knows...maybe I'll get to meet you in
person at the world championships in April!

I saw my first live game about three years ago and finally, a year
and a half ago I decided I just had to learn how to play. There
were several women that played in Houston, but it has just been
recently that we actually have organized ourselves and we play one
another. Most of us though, in order to get to play more than once
a week play on several of the men's teams. We are very proud of our
accomplishments thus far and are looking forward to playing in the
upcoming tournamnet in Las Vegas on Feb 28, 29 and March 1 - 2.

I love the sport of hockey. I played ringette (similar to hockey)
for two years in high school. After those two years, we switched
over to hockey. Minnesota became the first state to sanction girl's
hockey at the high school level. I was apprehensive at first, but
then I realized the awesome sport that I was missing. Our team did
well, and became the 1995 First Ever Girl's State Hockey Champions.
It was awesome. Now I am attending the United States Air Force
Academy. I am playing soccer here, but unfortunately there is no
women's hockey team. I skate and play pick up games at least twice
a week, but it just isn't the same. I want to have a team to play
on here. I guess they tried two years ago, but it fell through. I
know there is enough interest, and we could have a good team. If
anyone has any suggestions, help me out! In the meantime, Let's

I read in the Vancouver Sun (online) that body-checking is illegal
in the women's game. As a hockey fan whose primary exposure has
been the NHL, I really don't understand why this is so.
Also, what about fighting? If two players went at each other, do
they sit for 5 minutes in the penalty box or are there more severe
penalties?

Most impressed with all your women's hockey info...
Just wanted to let you know about some girls high school
programs here in New Jersey......
There are, I believe, four prep teams...Lawrenceville, Princeton Day
School, Stuart Country Day, and Pingry School...Additionally,
Princeton High School has the only public school girls team in NJ
history...
I coached the team for its first two seasons of existence (as well
as coaching the boys team). I was followed by a former player from
Princeton Univ. for one season and last season Tony Willard (whose
daughter is one of the team's best players) took over....The team
has steadily improved and plays a 6-8 game schedule
The prep teams play more games but our team has continually closed
the talent-gap and has consistently drawn 30-35 players....

i am a goalie & coach in north carolina trying to start a womens

fact that most people in nc have never heard of ice hockey (native
that is) and the fact that the world seems to raise a brow at the

I play field hockey and have been a national player for Jamaica. I
have not seen any information within your pages on field hockey.
Ball hockey does not appear to be the same thin. Given the fact
that field hockey is such anh international sport, perhaps it would
be a good idea to feature it? Somehow your pages seem incomplete

It is great to see that information about women's hockey is easily
available on the net, given it is nearly impossible to learn
anything through traditional media sources. As a hockey fan and as a
proud Canadian I look forward to the upcoming Olympics. My question
is: Will the games be televised?
I would go out of my way to watch some of the women's olympic hockey
games. I understand the men's games will be hyped because of the NHL
and the history - but since its the first time for women should we
not be able to watch some games? This is an opportunity to show the
world!
Note: as a man I have faced some ridicule for my interest in women's
hockey. I thank Don Cherry for his support of the women's game. Time
and again he voices his appreciation of the game. Appealing to what
he has said has saved me from the ribbing of those who are perfectly
satisfied with continuing to be ignorant of women's hockey.
I hope CBC covers a couple of games. If you do too email them and
let them know. If enough of us do so...

Hi, I am Lisa Boyd from Williams Lake, BC and I enjoyed browsing
through your website. I never knew they had a womens ballhockey
league and I would like to join a team that travels to different
tournaments. I have been playing ballhockey for about 7 years and
never thought about quitting. I play with a team called
Inter-legends, we have been playing for about 5 years at tournaments
around BC but never the big ones. We win some and lose some

I found most of your aricles quite interesting but...when you wrote
about the individual awards at NARcH why were the winners of the
skills competition eliminated? Though the Ca teams lack the
experience of ice the Canadians have it was 2 teenage CA girls that
won the skills. As you can guess I am the mother of the 14yr you
came in second to in the breakaway shootout! (Lori DiGiacomo). She
loves the game and figured skated to level 5 freestyle before
playing roller hockey as the only girl among 250 boys. She will be
skating for Team Calf Ice Hockey this year but claims that roller
hockey is more fun and easier to get a game going.In all fairness
all the WINNERS should be mentioned.

Great Site! We are a small promotional company in Southern
California, and we have created a version of ball hockey that might
be of interest to you. It's called Ballistic Hockey, and it is
basically a modified pick-up game. We play four-on-four, with no
goalies and small, round goal which we manufacture (this is in place
of a garbage can which most pick-up roller hockey players use). The
game's rules were created to help new players understand the sport
and enjoy the fun of roller hockey. Check out our page at

Julia Ahsmun has told me many times about your page. I finally
found it! Keep up the great work! If there's any way I can help
you with my limited resources (time & $$$) I'd be happy to as I am
able. You know that GREAT!+Girls Really Expect A Team! As a result
of working with girls, parents & interested community members in MN
we now have 67 high school ice hockey teams, half that number of jv
teams, & litereally hundreds of youth & adult female teams where few
(20?) existed as recently as 1992. This was done with much
education, determination and effort by many and some hesitant
cooperation by a few who held the power to change the system. The U
of MN has a coach, Laura Halldorson (former Colby coach) & a team
starting in 1997. YES! Do you have any info or fotos of turn of the

I'm a referee and actually reffed the St.F.X.U. women's team today.
They play a girls team from Antigonish. I'm writing to let you know
that University College of Cape Breton (UCCB) is trying to assemble
a womens hockey team not even a year after scraping the mens team to
a lack of funds. Since the mens team was scrapped two womens varsity
teams have already been formed. Now after eliminating hockey they're
trying to start womens

My daughter, Lauren Trottier (LaurenTrot@aol.com) is 17
years old and in her tenth season of hockey. She will
play at Dartmouth starting next fall. She is currently
playing center/wing on an all-girl rep team in Seattle:
the NW Admirals. The team plays in the lower mainland BC
female hockey league and so far is undefeated in league
play (2 ties and many wins). This is only the second
season Lauren has played on an all-girl team (I coached
the first one--two years ago). My big dread is that I
will not be able to see all of her games when she goes out
east for college in the fall. Anybody in New England need
a market researcher/economic analyst?
I also have a son, Kevin, age 15, who plays Bantam rep. for
Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association, also in the Seattle
area.

I coach the Stephen Township Jr. Girls which is near London Ont. My
daughter is 13 on Feb. 23 and is an exceptional hockey player. She
is a defensewomen with Bobby Orr qualities.I know every parent
thinks the same thing but Michelle really has exceptional talent.I
have been around hockey either playing or coaching for 33 years and

Hi Andria
I was surfing the net and came upon your website.I think it is great
that you have brought women's hockey to the world of the Internet. I
have played women's hockey for the past 25 years and even tho' I
will turn 40 this year I have no intentions of hanging up my skates.
I hope to keep going as long as my body will let me. I only wish I
were 20 years younger as now girls have something to shoot for with
World Championships and Olympics . The highlight of my career was
winning our Provincial AA championships and the Western Canadians in
1995 when I was the team captain. Next weekend we will be gunning
for our third consecutive Provincial title as the Vancouver Island

I have been playing hockey for about six years. I have organized a
women's league in southern California. It has since grown into to a
more structured program at Disney Ice in Anaheim, California. We
have put together a Club of travel teams ranging from novice up to
senior B level. we hope that next year we will gain a greater
following and be able to produce a senior A team as well.
I am currently beginning a master's Thesis project in the area of
sport history. I would love to get some more information on the
history of women's hockey in both the US and Canada. If you could
direct me to a few source to get me started I would appreciate it.
I have a few books and I've accessed lots of your sites. I have a
desire to focus on the development of hockey in the States, as less
has been researched in this area than the Canadian side. But, both
are important as the U.S. game has developed as a result of the
Canadian efforts. Anything you can do would be greatly
appreciated. I already have contact with Team USA players so that
is a start.

I use a search engine through Dartmouth University and it sent me
your way with one of my queries. After looking through the web
page, I am truly impressed. One thing that still astounds me is how
women go about their lives while still pursuing their favorite
sports. While men tend to merely concentrate on simply their sport,
women consistently find other things to do while in college. Men
typically don't realize that there is a life after collegiate sports
and don't prepare accordingly, but women almost always seem to
recognize this and make the appropriate choice for a post-collegiate
sports life. The fact that you are one of many women who has done
this makes me all the more respectful of women and what they do for
sports. You use your athletic ability to propel yourself through
college and make the most of your time. If only more male athletes
could see this insight.
I also find your web page very interesting and well-organized. All
the links were up-to-date and the way everything moved together well
was very refreshing and fun to look around in. I will have to come
back and visit sometime soon, hopefully you update your page from
time to time. Also, since women's hockey is on such a rise
throughout the US, I am looking forward to possibly coaching one of
these new or almost new HS women's teams. I am finishing my
undergrad in Secondary Education and hope to be able to coach while
I teach. If the women's position is available wherever I go, I
would absolutely love the opportunity to be able to coach. I only
hope that the women I coach will have the same intensity and
direction of other women I have seen, you being another example I
could use.
Thanks again for a look at what sports should be in the world, and
not the greed of what so pro-sports have become. Best of luck with
all of your future endeavors, and I hope the groin is healed or well
on its way. (Got the same problem myself, I am a goalie who went a

Hello I am 17 years old and am interrested in Universtity Hockey,
and hope to play. Well I was going to try out for the Nova Scotia
team but I am too old only by 21 days. Which made me very mad.
Someone told me that next year I could try out for Acadias Womens
Hockey team. But I am only still in High School and we do not have
a girls hockey team. But I did try out for the guys team and I
thought that I could make it but I don't think that they want a girl
on the team.

I grew up in Montreal and played ice hockey in an "outdoor" house
league in the mid-seventies (brrrr!); cold but who cared. There were
4 teams in the league all named after flowers (cute). Our team was
called the Roses. I started playing in figure skates and then
graduted to these skates that I thought were just the coolest - a
white figure skate boot (no protection of course but they WERE
white!) with real HOCKEY blades (A Canadian Tire special!) It never
crossed my mind just to buy regular hockey skates. I also remember
playing in a tournament in the States (big road trip -New Hampshire
I think) which was very exciting (I think we got creamed though).
The last year I played in that league, our finals were held indoors
(what a treat! I can't believe we actually got ice time back then).
My hockey career was over by the time I was 16 and then resurrected
when I moved to Toronto when I was in my mid-twenties;again playing
outdoors (pickup) at Ramsden Park with a group of very enthuiastic
women. We then graduated to playing indoors at Moss Park Arena in
the late 80's getting ice time at 11pm on Friday evenings. Now I'm
still playing hockey at the age of 36 in a women's rec league (The
Women's Hockey Club of Toronto -W.H.C.T.) since it's inception in
1993 and loving every minute of it. The league started out with only
5 teams then and has grown to 12 teams this year (1997-98) and
there's still a waiting list! We have prime time ice time every
Saturday evenings from 6pm to 10pm. The ages range from women in
their twenties to women in their fifties. We also hold an annual
tournament every April and invite about 6 other teams. So hockey is
happening in a big way every Saturday night in downtown Toronto -
and it's a real rush !!
Our league also has a Web Page -you can do a search on Womens'
Hockey and our link will appear.

I started playing hockey because I love watching it and I know play
for Bracknell Queen Bees, Women's British Premier Division and for
Bracknell Blackhawks men's Rec team.
My boyfriend also plays rec hockey and I believe that only a hockey
player can understand another hockey player (especially when your
team's ice-time is at 11.30 at night and 1.30 in the morning!).

Hi Andrea. I'm 6 yrs old. My dad took me to the Russia and the
Finland games and he saw the gold game with my mom. We got all the
Canadian players to sign our program (except Nancy Drolet). It was
my dad who was looking for you to sign the Hockey Hall of Fame book
(Spirit of the Game). Cathy Phillips told him that you were looking
for him at the bottom of the stairs but he wasn't patient enough to
wait there. I hope we get another chance for you to autograph the
picture of the 1994 team in this book. I won about 8 prizes in the
shooting contests downstairs (including 3 pucks that we got signed
by Cassie, Stacey and Danielle Goyette). I usually go with my dad
to meet Hockey Hall of Fame oldtimers, so this was a nice change for
us and we really enjoyed the hockey!! If you're ever near Guelph
and have time to sign our book, let us know ((519)836-4768). If you
hear when the 1997 women's cards are available we would like to get

I am just starting my second season playing hockey. I was given a
pair of skates, borrowed some pads, and thrown on the ice. I had
never skated before, but I am TOTALLY addicted!! I have spent as
much time on the ice as possible and am improving. I currently
skate between 6 and 10 hours a week. I have games only once a week
: ( on Sundays. I am 20 yrs old, however I am one of the youngest
on my team. I have a grandmother on my team as well. It is really
cool. I am in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA. In town we have the Fairbanks
Womens Hockey Association (FWHA). We currently have 9 teams in the
association and 1 extra team on our schedule. It is an all girls
team in the Fairbaks Amateur Hockey Association (FAHA). We are
hoping to survive this season and from there in the future keep
growing. There is also a women's team, the Arctic Stars, who play
in the men's teir II division, and they have been know to clean up
once in a while. : ) Well, I will let you go. I am just glad to
see stuff out there promoting womens hockey. I didn't know that
women's hockey even existed until I got a flyer in the mail a little
over a year ago. I have been a six year softball player and they
got the roster lists from the local assoc. and sent flyers to the
ladies who played softball. Boy, am I glad they did. Well, have a

in the future, I think the essentials that you are adding to the

Our daughter is playing hockey in Calgary. We saw a licence plate
frame which had the message 'Women's Hockey, Our National Sport'. My
wife and I found that these items were sold at a tournament in
Toronto. Do you know if they are still available and if so from

I was just looking for my friends bands page and i stumbled across
this one. i LOVE hockey, no matter whos playing(black,yellow,red,
purple,man,woman,pseudonym...ne 1.its all good. hockey is by far the
best. thats why i quit my job for 5 months...just so i could be a

Thanks Andria for this great web site! I'm 31-years-old and married.
I started playing hockey with the Charlotte (NC) Women's Hockey
Association in May after a 10-year absence from one season of
intramural ice hockey at college and a lifetime of outside winter
skating (for play).
Needless to say, your tips for skating, shooting and playing will be
most valuable. I printed off everything to help me play. I love the
sport. Even though I'm not very good now, my improvement has been
tremendous. My husband is a goalie and a better (level up) player
than me, but he helps me by watching my practices and games and
giving me suggestions and praise. Thanks again for this fun and
helpful resource.

Hi, I am a 11th grader at Albert Lea Senior High School in Albert
Lea Minnesota. Our school has just started a girls varsity hockey
program, it is so exciting. I played hockey when I was 9 yrs. old
on a boys team, it was a little overwhelming. I joined our figure
skating club the next year and quit hockey. I have been figure
skating for the past 7 yrs. There was talk about getting a hockey
program started for girls about 2 yrs. ago, but nothing happened.
Fall of 1996, my mother wrote 3 letters(to the athletic director,
the superintent, and to the board of education) that's what all
started it. There are about 25 girls on our team. This summer and
fall we went to all kinds of camps to get ready for our season, it
was so great. We start the true season about 2 weeks ago and
everyone is very pumped up! It's going to be an interesting year for
our team, but we will have fun. I think your web page is great,
it's really nice to see this kind of stuff on the internet. I am
also 1 of the 2 captains on our team. Our community is a big hockey
community (it consists of about 18,000 people) so this is a really
big thing for not just the girls on the team and our coaches, but
everyone. The guy hockey support us more than we could have ever
dreamed. Thanks for listening!

Hey Andria...I play Senior A hockey for Thunder Bay 'Kicken Ice'.
We were recatagorized last year from Senior C to A... Wow... big jump.
We thought we were going to get blown away at the Provincials but we
won 2 out of 3 games...impressive...

I've been playing hockey for the last 14 years. I'm 19 now, so that
would mean that I've been playing since I was 5. I love everything
about the game, and there is nothing better than skating out on the
ice and hearing it crack below you!! My dream is to one day be on
the National Team or even get the chance to play with women of that
caliber. I skated with Karan Bye two summers ago and that was a
great experience!!! I hope that one day Women's hockey will get all

I enjoy your fabulous women's hockey pages and visit them
often for information. You probably don't remember, but we
had a short period of e-mail correspondence several years
ago when I was at the University of Minnnesota just before
you started writing your thesis. Of course the topic was
hockey, Montreal Canadiens and women's hockey. I would like
to emphatically THANK YOU for encouraging me to play
hockey even though I am older (France St. Louis, #3, is my
favorite player on Canada's Women's National Hockey Team
because she is my age!). I have played for one year and have
improved quite a bit from those first wobbly steps and
subsequent many falls (thank goodness for equipment!) on the
ice last year. Now I am truly addicted to this sport. Do
you participate/coach/run any hockey camps in the summer for

I played hockey as a little girl on frozed ponds at home inNFLD. It
was my first love. Bobby Orr was my idol!! Unfortunately girls of
that era in my province were not exactly encouraged to pursue the
sport. IN my case I was told to forget it and virtually had to keep
my playing exploits a secret lest my mother find out!! She didnt
share my zeal or primary school femanism! Well decades later, I
would love to play my favorite sport again. This time without having
to hide my stick!! Any information as to where i can get involved

I was on the Committee that hosted the Canadian, and US womens teams
in a game for the Three Nation Cup It was quite an experience and
the Atom team in which i was a trainer for play a short scrimage
between periods, what an opportunity to see such great players up
close, and my hat goes off to all players on both teams for making
the young girls of Smiths Falls, have something to dream about, my
daughter was fascinated and is determined to be the best that she
