Finland qualified to attend the first three IIHF Championnats mondiaux (in 1990, 1992, and 1994). To qualify to attend the Championnats mondiaux, Finland must finish in the top 5 teams at the European A Championship. Finland won the gold medal at the 1995 European A Championship which was held from March 19-26, 1995 in Riga, Latvia. Finland has placed 1st at the last four European A Championships (1989, 1991, 1993 and 1995).
