COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (October 29, 1998) - USA Hockey today announced the roster and coaching staff for the 1998 United States Women's Select Team, which will compete in the 1998 Three Nations Cup, December 10-16 in Kuortane, Finland. The tournament, which features the three medalists from the XVIII Olympic Winter Games the United States, Canada and Finland will be the first international women's ice hockey competition since the Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
The announcement was made by USA Hockey President Walter L. Bush, Jr. (Edina, Minn.) and U.S. Women's National and Olympic Team Head Coach Ben Smith (Gloucester, Mass.).
The 1998 U.S. Women's Select Team will be coached by Julie Sasner (Madison, Wis.), head coach of the newly-formed University of Wisconsin varsity women's ice hockey program. Sasner will be assisted by Laura Halldorson (Minneapolis, Minn.), head coach of the University of Minnesota women's ice hockey team.
Sasner and Halldorson will guide the 20-player team which features 11 Olympians on its roster. Goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.); defensemen Chris Bailey (Marietta, N.Y.) and Sue Merz (Greenwich, Conn.); and forwards Laurie Baker (Concord, Mass.), Alana Blahoski (St. Paul, Minn.), Karyn Bye (River Falls, Wis.), Tricia Dunn (Derry, N.H.), Cammi Granato (Downers Grove, Ill.), Katie King (Salem, N.H.), Shelley Looney (Brownstown Township, Mich.) and Jennifer Schmidgall (Edina, Minn.) all made history as members of the gold medal-winning 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team.
Granato is the only player to have competed with the USA Hockey women's international program since its inception in 1990. The captain of the 1998 U.S. Olympic Team, she tied for the team lead in scoring at the Winter Games with eight points (4-4) in six games. Granato also tallied the first U.S. goal in Olympic women's ice hockey competition.
Bye, the assistant captain of the 1998 U.S. Olympic Team, also tied for the team lead in scoring at the Winter Games with eight points (5-3) in six games. In recognition of her outstanding play, Bye was named the 1998 USA Hockey Women's Player of the Year.
Joining the Olympians on the 1998 U.S. Women's Select Team are defensemen Winny Brodt (Roseville, Minn.) and Amy Coehlo (North Truro, Mass.), and forward Meaghan Sittler (East Amherst, N.Y.), all of whom have previously represented the United States in international competition.
Brodt and Coehlo were both members of the 1996 U.S. Women's Select Team. Sittler was a member of the 1997 U.S. Women's Select Team, the 1996 U.S. Women's National Team and the 1995 U.S. Women's Select Team. A 1998 graduate of Colby College, Sittler is the school's all-time leading scorer with 240 points (119 -121) in 85 games.
Newcomers to international competition are goaltender Lauren Goldstein (Milton, Mass.); defensemen Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Catherine Hanson (Marquette, Mich.); and forwards Brandy Fisher (Colton, N.Y.), Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.) and Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.).
Fisher, the all-time leading scorer at the University of New Hampshire with 240 points (129-111) in 139 games, led the Wildcats to the inaugural American Women's College Hockey Alliance Division I National Championship in 1998, her senior season. In addition, she was named the first-ever recipient of The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented annually by the USA Hockey Foundation to the most outstanding player in women's intercollegiate varsity ice hockey.
Darwitz, who turned 15 on October 13, becomes the youngest woman ever named to a U.S. Women's Select Team.
"I am confident this mix of Olympians and other talented players that will be wearing a USA jersey for the first time will compliment each other very well," said Smith. "Some of this roster was chosen from the 1998 USA Hockey Women's Festival, our top developmental and evaluation camp. These players proved themselves at that camp and also demonstrated the talent to ensure that our women's program will continue to build upon its past success."
