There are about 200 female inline players in NZ and about 100 Ice players. So it is starting to pick up on the women's side of things! A lot of background from the Roller Hockey where the New Zealand team came 3rd in 1992 at the World Roller Championship (traditional).
This is just a note to let you know that the NZ Womens Team has just returned from a Trans Tasman 3 game series against Australia. Unfortunately we were unable to win a game, but had set some goals for the team. These I am pleased to say we were able to achieve. Below is a brief report.
Well we arrived back from Australia yesterday very tired and totally exhausted, after 2 weeks of travel and hockey. Although a series loss, we proved to be competative, and will be a threat to the Aussies from now on. The team set goals before we played and that was to reduce goals against and score on the Aussies and we did both. After a three game series win the week before over the Canadian Moose, it was always going to be tough to stay on top. Flu, tiredness and injury were our main problems, but these were overcome by a team of dedicated players. Hopefully we can look forward to a qualifying round against Austria and Korea.
All games were played in Newcastle, Australia. Game Stats were:
Game 1; July 19, 2002, 10-1 loss (Alyx scored with Annabelle Lewis and
Emma Grey asisting)
Game 2; July 20, 2002, 3-1 loss (Brydie Donald scored with Alyx
assisting.) Great game.
Game 3; July 21, 2002, 7-0 loss Injuries and perhaps lack of fitness
contributed to our demise in this game.
A great tour from our point of view. The team played with exceptional grit at times and a ton of pride. They now have the Aussies in their sights to beat. From comments at the games, we have gained a lot of respect, something all the team deserves.
Kind Regards,

Please contact Angelique Mawson (rollerworld@xtra.co.nz) of the New Zealand Inline hockey team for more details about Women's Ice Hockey in New Zealand.
I'm from new Zealand and you probably dont know but we have Womens Ice Hockey and Womens Roller Hockey here - roller hockey is big with 7 teams in New Zealand and we play at the Nationals as well as regular tournys and leagues - our the 'Panthers' won the nationals last year. Our ages range from 16 - 32 so a wide age group.
Our Ice team is based in Auckland and I think there is also a womens Ice team in the South Island. We practise regularly and play against old timer teams etc - but we are entering the u19 contact league this year. We are also playing an u16 team from Canada in June sometime!

Other info about womens hockey in NZ is that Christchurch (South Island) has a womens league with three teams in it that play right through the regular season. There are also women who play throughout the Southern region in Queenstown, Dunedin, and Gore.
