Women's ice hockey has taken roots across Asia and I'm not just talking about Japan, China and Australia!! It's now being played in countries such as Hong Kong (not to be confused with China), the Philippines, Singapore, and even Thailand, thanks to the presence of so many expatriates living and working in this region!!
Asia's biggest hockey tournament is held in Hong Kong annually. It has grown so much that the tournament is now divided over two weekends so that Kids and Asian Men play on the first weekend (March 5-7, 1999) and the Women and Int'l Men play in the second weekend (March 11-14, 1999). This is also due to the extreme shortage of ice rinks and ice-time in Hong Kong (we're always fighting with figure skaters over it)! To date, the teams that have confirmed to participate in the 1999 World Ice Hockey 5's are: Hong Kong (x2), Bangkok (x2), Manila, Singapore, Japan (Tsukuba), Australia and even one from Calgary!! In fact, Gordie Howe will also appear at the tournament as a Guest of Honour!
