CALGARY (CP) -- All 20 members of the world champion team and eight other top players have been invited to compete for spots on Canada's first Olympic women's hockey team, Canadian Hockey announced Tuesday.
"I think we really have a good mix of players," said head coach Shannon Miller. "We have some veterans with a great deal of experience, but we also have some young, ambitious players with impressive talent.
"We need to have players competing hard for spots and that's what we'll have."
The training camp roster includes four goalies, eight defencemen and 16 forwards, a list that Miller will trim to two goalies and 18 skaters for the Olympics. Miller and assistant coaches Ray Bennett and Daniele Sauvageau selected the eight additional players following evaluation camps in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.
The training camp will assemble in Calgary in September for 5 1/2 months to gear up for the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, from Feb. 7 to 17, 1998. The team will be based at Father David Bauer Arena and play exhibition games, as well as the second annual Three Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., from Dec. 12 to 21.
The invitees include five players who have played on each of Canada's four world championship teams: Judy Diduck, Geraldine Heaney, Angela James, France St-Louis and Stacy Wilson.
Among the eight non-Team Canada players are goaltender Manon Rheaume, a two-time world champion, and Isabelle Minier, who has played for Les Patriotes of the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres for three years.
