Team Canada competed in a series of exhibition games against the Finnish National team in January 1999, to help prepare for the upcoming World Championship. The inaugural TSN Challenge saw the top two teams in women's hockey face-off, as Canada's National Women's hockey team took on arch-rival Team USA on March 1, 1999 at the Brampton Centre for Sports and Entertainment. This game was broadcasted by TSN. Canada's National Women's team got together on February 27, 1999 and held practices for two days prior to the TSN Challenge on March 1.

The main event of the year was the 1999 IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship. It took place in Espoo, Finland from March 8-14, 1999. Canada claimed the gold medal for the 5th consectutive time.
The year closed with an evaluation camp in the fall of 1999, and the 1999 Three Nation's Cup tournament.
