The 1997 National team competed in the 1997 World Championship in the spring. After the World Championship, a series of evaluation camps were held to select a team that would train for four months in the fall in Calgary. The year closed with a number exhibition games (in preparation for the 1998 Winter Olympics) and the 1997 Three Nations Cup.
The Canadian National women's team received government funding to train at the Canadian Hockey Centre in Calgary, from September 1997 until January 1998 in preparation for the 1998 Winter Olympics. This was the first time in the history of this country that Canada's national women's hockey team has received the government financing, that has until now been an all-male domain.
There were evaluation camps in Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal in the spring of 1997 to finalize the list of 28 players who were invited to train in Calgary. The evaluation camps were as follows:
While in Calgary, the national team's regimen included on-ice and off-ice sessions, and exhibition games once or twice a week against male and female teams.
From November 12-22, 1997, Team Canada traveled to Finland to play a series of exhibition games against Team Finland and Team Sweden. And from December 12-21, 1997, the Canucks particpated in the Three Nations Cup in Lake Placid, NY, against the No. 2-ranked Americans and third-ranked Finnish national teams. Team Canada took home the silver medal.
As federally carded athletes, Canada's National team members can receive between $300 and $810 per month. Canadian Hockey plans to augment that amount to bring the athletes' income to between $15,000 to $20,000 for the six months or so the team is together leading to the Olympics.
Team USA and Team Canada played a series of exhibition games throughout Canada and the USA prior to the 1998 Winter Olympics. See the section below entitled Exhibition Games leading up to the Olympics for game results.
