A national team has recently started in Austria. The team played their first ever game on the March 31, 2001 against Hungary. Austria lost by a score of 4-1, but nonetheless, this was a great historical event for Austrian women's ice hockey!
A national championship started for the first time in Austria at the end of the 1998-1999 hockey season. The first women's team to start in Austria was the Villacher Gipsy Girls. They started in the 1991-92 season.
