Christmas 2024

Hi Everyone!

We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2025!

Although this year had its share of great moments, and left us countless happy memories, it was also a year marked by a deep loss. In August, Ruth Hunter, Andria's mother, came down with an infection, went into the hospital, and eight days later passed away, two months shy of her 89th birthday. We were blessed to have spent so much quality time with her this summer, and our memories of these wonderful moments provide us with some measure of solace, but her loss leaves a gaping hole in our hearts.

The year had started with a bang, with Andria’s participation, in February, in the Ontario 55+ Winter Games with the Peterborough Electric Collective hockey team. They won all their games and were crowned Provincial Champions, thus qualifying for the Canada 55+ Games, which would take place in Québec City during the last week of August. Speaking of hockey, Rémy and his team, the Duffield Devils, won the regular season championship in the GTHL A league for the 2nd year in a row.

Camille and Marc had the great pleasure of spending the first week of July with Grandma Ruth, at her house in Lakefield. Every day, Ruth doted on Camille and drove her to the Buckhorn Sewing Camp, while Marc would head off to the Leahy Music Camp. Both really, really enjoyed their camp experience, and loved spending time with Ruth! During that time, Rémy really enjoyed volunteering as a counsellor at Camp Quin-Mo-Lac, Célia flew across the country to Victoria to visit her cousin Josie, and Andria hosted her former Swiss hockey teammate Chantal and her family back in Mimico.

During the month of July, our whole family went on a 10-day trip to Italy and Switzerland, to sample the amazing food, and enjoy the sensational sights of Lago Maggiore and of the Swiss Alps. Above all, we wanted to visit some dear friends, including Andria’s old DHC Langenthal teammates, from back when she played hockey in Switzerland in 1992-93! We have so many fond memories, like the evening spent on the shores of Lago Maggiore celebrating Camille’s 14th birthday, a BBQ with Andria’s former teammates, and another one with Hannes’ family and numerous friends! We can’t be thankful enough to our hosts, Dana, Krishnaveni, and Michael in Verbania, and Hannes and Irene in Switzerland. It was such a treat, and such a pleasure to spend time with all of you!!

Upon our return, on July 24th, we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, and then our family headed out for a two week stay at Grandma Ruth’s cottage in the Kawarthas. We still cherish the wonderful memories of the time we shared with many of our closest friends! Above all, it was an immense pleasure to have Ruth with us for most of that time, and to have made plenty of time to play her favourite card game, “Mexican Poker,” with her! Looking back, we feel so blessed to have shared that time with her, when she was doing so well.

Less than three weeks later, on August 21st, Ruth passed away. With a heavy heart, we were facing an impossible decision – postpone Ruth’s funeral until after the Canada 55+ Games, or abandon Andria’s dream of participating in it. After discussing it with her family, the decision was unanimous, as Ruth had always been Andria’s biggest, loudest supporter, and everybody firmly believed that Ruth would have absolutely wanted Andria to play.

While Célia was finishing a summer course at Trent University, Camille was participating in a badminton camp with one of her school friends, and Rémy was working as a supervisor at the CNE’s Funnel Cake Shop, Andria and Marc headed off to Québec City for the Canada 55+ Games, all while making long distance preparations for Ruth’s upcoming funeral.

Andria’s team went undefeated through the round robin portion of the competition, with Andria scoring numerous spectacular goals, which she dedicated to her mom’s memory. In the final they faced off against a rival team from Ontario, and after the overtime period, the game was still scoreless. Despite a breathtaking goal from Andria, the team bowed out on penalty shots, earning the silver medal. It was a surreal experience. (Note from Marc, the editor: I had to sneak by Andria the adjectives “numerous spectacular” and “breathtaking.” 🤣)

Immediately after, Marc and Andria headed off to a reunion commemorating the 50th anniversary of the closing of the village of Saint-Fidéle-de-Restigouche, where Marc’s parents had met in the 50s. Marc had written a song telling the story of the village as seen through his father’s eyes, and entitled Saint-Fidèle-de-Restigouche, and it meant a lot for him to be able to attend the reunion, and to share his song. He had the great privilege and honour of closing the evening by playing it. It was a very touching, and unforgettable experience, and a great pleasure to see some of his cousins from the majestic Gaspé peninsula.

When we got back to Ontario, we were finally able to say goodbye to Ruth, with a beautiful celebration of life. The Lakefield United Church was packed, as Ruth had touched so many lives. Andria and Célia each gave Ruth a beautiful tribute, while Marc played and sang for her the hymn “Be Not Afraid”. Every day, we miss Ruth very much.

In September, Célia (21) started her 3rd year in biology at Trent University, Rémy (17) his final year of high school, and Camille (14) her first year of high school (both at St-Frère-André)! In October, Marc and Andria went to the University of New Hampshire (UNH), for another celebration of life, this one a tribute to Russ McCurdy, Andria’s coach when she played at UNH from 1986 to 1990. Andria also had the great pleasure of reuniting with many of her former UNH teammates!

Rémy and Camille both play hockey (Warren Park and Mimico) and work as rink guards, while Camille also swims and takes sewing lessons. Andria continues to play a little hockey, and enjoyed volunteering for the Turtle Protectors organization. Marc still enjoys working for Autodesk, and sings and plays guitar in the choir at Mimico’s St-Leo’s Parish.

Bonjour à tous et à toutes,

Nous aimerions tout d'abord vous offrir nos meilleurs vœux pour un très Joyeux Noël, ainsi qu'une Bonne, Heureuse et Sainte Année 2025!

Bien que cette année fut remplie de très bons moments, et nous aura laissé beaucoup d’heureux souvenirs, elle fut aussi une année marquée par une douloureuse perte. En effet, au mois d’août, Ruth Hunter, la mère d’Andria, est entrée à l’hôpital suite à une infection, et huit jours plus tard, nous quittait à l’âge de 88 ans. Nous nous comptons chanceux d’avoir eu le bonheur de passer beaucoup de temps avec elle cet été, de pouvoir nous consoler un peu avec ces précieux souvenirs, mais son départ laisse un trou béant dans nos cœurs.

L’année avait fort bien commencé, avec la participation d’Andria, au mois de février, avec l’équipe de hockey du Peterborough Electric Collective, aux Jeux d’hiver de l’Ontario 55+. Elles ont remporté tous leurs matchs, décrochant le championnat de l’Ontario, se qualifiant ainsi pour les Jeux du Canada 55+, qui aurait lieu à Québec, la dernière semaine du mois d’août! En parlant de hockey, au mois de mars, Rémy et son équipe, les Devils de Duffield, décrochèrent de nouveau le titre de champion de la saison régulière de la ligue "A" de la GTHL.

Camille et Marc ont tous deux eu le grand plaisir de passer la première semaine de juillet avec Grandma Ruth dans sa maison à Lakefield. Chaque jour, Ruth dorlotait Camille et l’apportait au Buckhorn Sewing Camp, tandis que Marc se rendait au Leahy Music Camp. Tous deux ont vraiment, vraiment aimé leurs camps, et aimé passer beaucoup de temps avec Ruth! Pendant ce temps, Rémy se portait volontaire au camp Quin-Mo-Lac, Célia s’envolait vers Victoria pour rendre visite à sa cousine Josie, et Andria accueillait Chantal, une ancienne coéquipière de hockey de la Suisse, et sa famille.

Lors du mois de juillet, notre famille est allée en Italie et en Suisse pour une dizaine de jours, afin de savourer la cuisine locale, et s’émerveiller des beautés du Lago Maggiore et des Alpes Suisses. Par-dessus tout, nous voulions rendre visite à des amis de longue date, incluant les anciennes coéquipières du DHC Langenthal, du temps où Andria jouait au hockey en Suisse, en 1992-93! Nous avons tellement de beaux souvenirs, comme cette soirée passée au bord du Lago Maggiore pour célébrer les 14 ans de Camille, un BBQ avec les anciennes coéquipières d’Andria, et un autre avec la famille de Hannes et de nombreux amis! Nous sommes tellement reconnaissant à nos hôtes, Dana, Khrisnaveni et Michael à Verbania, ainsi que Hannes et Irene, en Suisse! Ce fut tellement un grand plaisir, que de passer du temps avec vous tous!!

Au retour, le 24 juillet, nous avons célébré notre 25e anniversaire de mariage, puis, notre famille est allée passer deux semaines au chalet de Grandma Ruth dans les Kawarthas. Nous chérissons toujours les nombreux souvenirs du temps partagé avec plusieurs de nos proches amis! Mais surtout, ce fut un grand bonheur que d’avoir Ruth avec nous durant presque tout ce temps, et d’avoir pris le temps de jouer plusieurs fois à son jeu de carte préféré, « Mexican Poker »! Ces nombreux moments passés avec Ruth lorsqu’elle se portait si bien nous apportent un peu de réconfort.

Moins de trois semaines plus tard, le 21 août, Ruth nous quittait. Le cœur lourd, nous faisions face à une décision impossible – reporter les funérailles après les Jeux du Canada 55+, ou abandonner le rêve d’Andria d’y participer. Après discussion avec sa famille, la décision fut unanime, car Ruth avait toujours été la plus grande fan d’Andria, et tous croyait que Ruth aurait absolument tenu à ce qu’Andria y participe.

Tandis que Célia terminait son cours d’été à Trent University, que Camille participait à un camp de badminton avec une de ses amies de l’école, et que Rémy travaillait comme superviseur au Funnel Cake Shop au CNE, Andria et Marc se rendirent à Québec pour les Jeux du Canada 55+, tout en faisant des préparatifs à distance pour les funérailles de Ruth.

L’équipe d’Andria fut invaincue lors du tournoi à la ronde, et Andria compta de nombreux buts spectaculaires, qu’elle dédia à la mémoire de sa mère. En finale, elles affrontèrent une équipe rivale de l’Ontario, et après la période de prolongation, le score était toujours 0-0. Malheureusement, malgré un but époustouflant d’Andria, l’équipe s’est inclinée en tire de barrage, et décrochait donc la médaille d’argent. Ce fut une expérience surréelle. (Note de Marc, l’éditeur : j’ai dû insérer les adjectifs « spectaculaires » et « époustouflant » à l’insu d’Andria 🤣)

Immédiatement après, Marc et Andria se rendirent aux retrouvailles du 50e anniversaire de la fermeture du village de Saint-Fidèle-de-Restigouche, où les parents de Marc s’étaient rencontrés dans les années 50. Marc avait écrit une chanson racontant l’histoire du village à travers les yeux de son père, intitulée Saint-Fidèle-de-Restigouche, et cela signifiait beaucoup pour lui de pouvoir participer aux retrouvailles, et de partager sa chanson. Il eut le privilège et l’honneur de clôturer la soirée souvenir en y jouant sa chanson. Ce fut une expérience tout aussi émouvante qu’inoubliable, et un grand bonheur que de revoir beaucoup de cousins et cousines de ce beau coin de pays qu’est la Gaspésie.

De retour en Ontario, nous avons pu enfin dire adieu à Ruth, avec une belle célébration de sa vie. L’église Lakefield United Church était bondée, car Ruth avait touché la vie de tellement de personnes. Andria et Célia lui ont rendu de beaux témoignages, et Marc a joué et chanté pour elle le cantique « Be Not Afraid ». Chaque jour, Ruth nous manque beaucoup.

Au mois de septembre, Célia (21 ans) entamait sa 3e année de biologie à Trent University, Rémy (17 ans) sa dernière année au secondaire, et Camille (14 ans), sa première année au secondaire (tous deux à St-Frère-André)! Au mois d’octobre, Marc et Andria se rendirent au University of New Hampshire (UNH), pour une autre célébration de vie, celle-ci pour Russ McCurdy, le coach d’Andria lorsqu’elle a joué au hockey à UNH de 1986 à 1990. Andria a aussi eu le bonheur de revoir plusieurs de ces anciennes coéquipières de UNH!

Rémy et Camille jouent au hockey (Warren Park et Mimico) et travaillent comme surveillant de patinoire, et Camille fait de la natation et des cours de coutures. Andria continue de jouer au hockey de temps en temps, et a bien aimé se porter volontaire pour l’organisation des Turtle Protectors. Marc aime toujours son travail chez Autodesk, et chante et joue de la guitare dans la chorale de la paroisse de St-Leo à Mimico.

En terminant, nous vous souhaitons un heureux temps des fêtes, et une belle année 2025!
